A mechanic who received a 2017 Toyota Camry for preventive maintenance was completely astonished by the car’s flawless condition.
Bud posted a video on TikTok to show a bit of the vehicle, which is in absolutely pristine condition. “I mean, it still has the sticker on the light, for God’s sake,” he said in the clip.
After taking a quick tour of the front of the car, he says: “Let me show you the dashboard. And I want you to go ahead and guess how many miles you think this vehicle has.”
Considering it’s a 2017 car, most people would probably assume a high number. However, Bud continues: “Whatever number you just thought of is wrong.”
He then surprised viewers by revealing that the Camry has only 1,830 kilometers on it. As a result, some commenters argued that maintenance on such a perfect car wouldn’t even be necessary.
However, Bud posted a follow-up video to explain the situation. “Let me tell you what’s going on. When you get an oil change, they put a sticker on your window.”
“On that sticker, there are a couple of numbers — one is mileage, the other is the date. The date isn’t there for fun; it’s there because your oil changes are tracked either by mileage or by time,” the mechanic explained.
He then went on to explain that cars with low usage can suffer from condensation. In other words, if a car doesn’t get warm enough, moisture forms inside the engine and isn’t burned off.
That condensation then goes into the oil pan. Over time, it accumulates and floats on top of the oil. So, when the car is driven, the mixture of water and oil (commonly known as milky oil) begins to circulate through the engine, causing all kinds of issues, including engine failure.
That’s why, he emphasized, preventive maintenance is important even for cars with low mileage or that aren’t driven very often.
